CAT® Tourniquet: Quality that counts – the original!

The Combat Application Tourniquet® (CAT®) is a one-handed tourniquet system for rapid control of life-threatening extremity bleeding.

What are the advantages of a CAT® Tourniquet?

  • The individually adjustable strap allows for application to most extremities.
  • A robust, ergonomic windlass facilitates gripping and turning.
  • The windlass system (strap with windlass) tightens a free-moving inner band to restrict arterial blood flow to the extremity.
  • Securing the windlass under a clip hook requires only one movement.
  • The CAT® hook-and-loop fastener provides additional security during transport.

How do I apply a tourniquet?

The CAT® Tourniquet is an essential component of tactical casualty care and is used in major incidents such as terrorist attacks, as well as a first measure for life-threatening bleeding. Although the application of a tourniquet should be trained, in an absolute emergency: If all other rescue measures, such as a pressure bandage, are not promising, anyone can use a tourniquet.

The tourniquet can also be applied with one hand in an emergency:

  1. Open the CAT® so that the strap forms an O-shaped loop. Apply the CAT® above the bleeding towards the torso by threading the injured extremity through the O-shaped loop of the hook-and-loop strap.
  2. Tighten the strap firmly so that a maximum of two fingertips can fit between the tourniquet and the extremity. Then firmly connect the hook-and-loop surfaces.
  3. Turn the windlass until the bleeding stops and the pulse below the wound can no longer be felt.
  4. Secure the windlass under the clip hook. Recheck the bleeding and the pulse – if necessary, increase the pressure by further turning the windlass.
  5. Place the end of the strap over the windlass and clip hook and secure both with the securing hook-and-loop fastener. If possible, note the time of application.

How do I recognize a fake?

Many copies of this tourniquet exist, which may not be able to generate the necessary pressure, loosen, or tear. Do not endanger the life you are trying to save again – rely on the original from a secure source.

Visually, the differences between genuine and fake tourniquets can be minor and are often difficult to detect. However, the following clues may indicate a replica:

  • Red tip outside the USA
  • Missing or inferior instructions for use: These are often not available in German and do not contain the most important data and details of a medical device, such as the manufacturer, EC-REP, or importer.

Quality defects of fakes are evident through:

  • Inferior rods that are bendable and easily break under the required pressure
  • More extensive windings that make sufficient tightening for hemorrhage control difficult or impossible

Incorrect application can have serious consequences, including death.
